Welcome!

We are delighted by your interest in Parkmont School, and pleased to welcome you to our website.

Parkmont was founded in 1972 by a group of committed parents who had grown dissatisfied with middle school options for their children in Washington. The principals of two schools, The Parkway Project (schools without walls) and Montessori (developmental curriculum), inspired the vision of the school that remains today. Despite having had a number of homes over the years, Parkmont merged with Somerset School in 1991, moved to our current 16th Street location, and acquired a high school.

We are very proud of the unique learning opportunities we provide to our students every day.  Because of the small class sizes (6-12 students per class) and the unique relationships formed between teachers and students, each student receives individualized attention and guidance through their schooling experience. Students take three academic classes at a time: English, Math, and a Main Lesson, which is two hours long and lasts for seven weeks. They take five Main Lessons per year. Offerings range from Biology to Shakespeare, from Latin American History and Culture to Coastal Ecology.  This gives students the opportunity to focus on one subject, and also allows for field trips and on-site learning, both in the DC area and beyond. Please see our Course Catalog for more course options. You will need Adobe Acobat Reader to view or print this file. This free software, and along with instructions on installation and use, is available at Adobe's website.

Each week students also take part in extracurricular activities through the "Afternoon Class" program. These offerings include a wide range of sports, arts, music, dance, computer skills, and more. Internships, held twice a week, are also an intensive part of the program. Throughout his or her high school experience, a student will have 4-8 internship placements, will delve into the world of work, and will develop skills, confidence, and inspiration in preparation for life after school.

Committed to diversity, the school maintains an active and large financial aid program.  Both the student body and faculty have diverse racial, socio-economic, cultural and religious backgrounds. By celebrating differences and embracing similarities, walls of bias and prejudice are broken down and doors are opened to shared experiences.

Our website offers just a glimpse of our school and the dedication we have for our students. We hope you are able to find the information you need, but please contact us if you have any questions.
