Parkmont Academic Programs
Parkmont is organized into two divisions: the Middle School, which encompasses the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades; and ninth through twelfth grades represent the Upper School.
Our dedicated and supportive teachers are all focused on enhancing each student's educational journey. The key to helping our students manage school and make decisions about their future is the blend of flexibility and structure in our program. Parkmont’s unique seven-week intensive courses and its dynamic curriculum support the school’s core goal of helping students to make the transition from doing what they're told to determining for themselves what they need to do.
An intimate teacher-to-student ratio of 1:6 allows for close adult-student relationships that provide support when needed, create daily exchanges between students and teachers, and build a strong, trusting sense of community.
The school offers a college preparatory curriculum and helps guide its students through the college selection process. Parkmont also welcomes students who plan to enter a vocation directly and/or delay their post-secondary education. Our Internship Program prepares students for the world of work and teaches them how academics can ready them for their careers.
The program in both the Middle and Upper Schools employs the same essential components:
- The school year is divided into five seven-week sessions
- Students select one Main Lesson and Afternoon Class each session, while Math and English are taken throughout the year
- Short, intensive sessions maximize interest and productivity
- Students work in small groups of 6-12, allowing for close student-teacher interaction
- Student to teacher ratio is 6:1
- Classes within the Middle and Upper School programs are mixed with respect to grades, allowing for students to be grouped by ability and not age
- Students are frequently evaluated, not just graded, throughout each session
- Individualized work allows students to assimilate material at their own pace
- Trips enliven courses and emphasize the practical aspect of education
- Advisors meet with students three times a week and additionally as needed to monitor progress and provide assistance and counseling
